How Fast Bad News Travels

A false story can now travel around the world before a newspaper has time to check a single fact. Researchers at one university followed thousands of messages and found that news that makes people angry circulates about six times faster than calm reporting.

Part of the reason is simple. Sharing a message costs nothing and takes one second, while checking it takes a phone call and half an hour.

Some editors now print a short line at the top of every report telling readers where the information came from. Early tests suggest that readers who see that line are slower to pass a story on, and more likely to ask questions first.
