Student Laboratory Rules

Room B-204: Student Laboratory Rules

  • Put on the safety glasses by the door before you touch any bottle.
  • No food or drink inside the room, not even water.
  • Write every observation in your own notebook, never on loose paper.
  • Leave the benches clean; the last group of the day washes the glassware.

Any experimental work after 5 p.m. must be booked with Dr. Hsu two days in advance, and no student may stay in the room alone. Broken glass goes into the red box, never into the paper bin.

The Clock That Never Hurries

An atomic clock in a locked room in Colorado loses less than one second in a hundred million years. Few people need that kind of accuracy, yet almost everyone uses it, because every phone map depends on satellites that carry such clocks.

The scientific idea behind them is simple. Atoms of one metal always take exactly the same tiny amount of time to change their state, so counting those changes is more reliable than counting the swings of a pendulum.

Engineers are now building a clock that is ten times more accurate. Their aim is not to be on time for dinner, but to measure how gravity slightly slows time itself.

Questions 29–32
29How accurate is the clock in Colorado?
AIt loses less than one second in a hundred million years
BIt has never been tested
CIt is ten times better than the new one
DIt loses about one second every year
(A) It loses less than one second in a hundred million years
解析第一句 loses less than one second in a hundred million years。
30How do most people use such clocks without knowing it?
AThrough radio programs
BThrough school timetables
CThrough the satellites behind phone maps
DThrough the clocks in their kitchens
(C) Through the satellites behind phone maps
解析every phone map depends on satellites that carry such clocks。
31Why are atoms better than a pendulum for keeping time?
AThey can be seen with the eye
BThey are much cheaper to buy
CTheir changes always take exactly the same time
DThey never need a room
(C) Their changes always take exactly the same time
Atoms of one metal always take exactly the same tiny amount of time to change their state。
32What is the purpose of the new clock?
ATo measure how gravity slows time
BTo help people arrive on time for meals
CTo make satellites lighter
