W: Welcome to the temple. Three things before you go in. Remove your shoes at the wooden step, not at the gate, and carry them with you rather than leaving them outside. Photographs are welcome in the courtyard but not in the main hall, where people are praying. If a monk or a nun is walking toward you in the corridor, step aside and let them pass. The tour in English begins at eleven and lasts about an hour.
Q26. Where should shoes be removed?
Q27. Where are photographs not allowed?
Q28. What should visitors do in the corridor?
M: This monument has been rebuilt three times, and each version tells us more about its own age than about the first builders. The original was wood and burned down. The second was stone but far larger, because the town had grown prosperous and wanted to show it. The third, which you see now, is a careful copy of the second, put up after the flood of 1954. What we call ancient is very often a nineteenth or twentieth century idea of ancient.
Q29. What happened to the first monument?
Q30. Why was the second one larger?
Q31. What is the speaker's main point?
W: A note about how we look after the painted ceiling. Light is the enemy, so the hall stays dim and no flash is permitted. Damp is the second enemy: after the flooding two winters ago we installed pumps, and the walls are measured every month. Visitors themselves are the third. Each person brings warmth and moisture, so we now limit the room to thirty people at a time. None of this restores what is already lost; it only slows what is still going.
Q32. Why is the hall kept dim?
Q33. What was installed after the flooding?
Q34. What does the speaker say about the work?
| Site | Visitors | Income | Open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Temple | 310,000 | NT$0 | 6 days |
| Hill Monument | 96,000 | NT$0 | 6 days |
| City Museum | 142,000 | NT$17m | 7 days |
| Stone Gate | 54,000 | NT$23m | 5 days |
M: Please look at the printed visitor figures for our four heritage sites. Notice that the site with the most visitors earns no money at all, because entry there is free and there is nowhere to spend money. The Stone Gate takes the most money from the fewest people, thanks to its shop. The City Museum is the only one open every day, which is why school groups nearly always choose it, whatever the exhibition happens to be.
Q35. According to the table and the talk, why do school groups choose the City Museum?
