W: We expect 150 guests, and we need a kitchen.
Q25. Which hall will they book?
W: Here is the plan for Saturday's festival. The ceremony at the temple begins at half past ten and lasts about forty minutes. The parade sets off an hour later and follows the river, not the main road, so shops there stay open as usual. Parking is prohibited along the whole route from eight in the morning; cars left there will be towed. If it rains heavily, the parade is canceled, but the ceremony goes ahead indoors.
Q26. How long does the ceremony last?
Q27. Which way does the parade go?
Q28. What happens if it rains heavily?
M: A word about how we mark long service here. On a staff member's tenth anniversary, the whole department stops work for twenty minutes at four o'clock, and the manager says a few words. We do not give speeches longer than that, because people find them awkward. Colleagues sign one card rather than sending separate messages. If someone would rather not be congratulated in public, tell the office beforehand and we simply do nothing.
Q29. What happens on a tenth anniversary?
Q30. Why are speeches kept short?
Q31. What should someone do if they do not want to be congratulated in public?
W: Customs change more quickly than people admit. Fifty years ago, a funeral here lasted three days and the whole street took part; today it is usually one afternoon, and neighbors send a message instead of attending. The lantern parade went the other way: it nearly died out in the nineteen eighties, then grew larger than ever once the town began to advertise it. What survives, it seems, is not what is oldest but what people still enjoy doing together.
Q32. How have funerals changed?
Q33. What happened to the lantern parade?
Q34. What is the speaker's conclusion?
| Event | Attendance | Cost | Indoors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lantern parade | 42,000 | Lowest | No |
| Street market | 26,000 | Medium | No |
| Night concert | 1,900 | Highest | Yes |
| Fireworks | 31,000 | High | No |
M: Please look at the printed attendance figures for our four festival events. Notice that the event with the largest crowd is also the cheapest to run, which is unusual. The night concert costs the most and draws the fewest people, and this is the third year in a row. The committee will not cut it, however, because it is the only event held indoors, and the whole festival needs somewhere to go when it rains.
Q35. According to the table and the talk, why will the night concert be kept?
