Ten years ago, phone theft was a daily phenomenon in most large cities. Today the number of cases has dropped sharply, and the reason is not more police on the streets.
Phone makers were finally forced to add a switch that turns a stolen phone into a useless piece of glass. A thief who cannot sell a stolen phone will not take the risk of stealing one.
Some experts warn that criminals have simply moved online, where one bank password is worth more than any handset. Still, the lesson stands: good design can prevent crime far more cheaply than punishment.
十年前，手機竊案在多數大城市是每天都會發生的現象。如今案件數大幅下降，原因並不是街上警力變多。
手機製造商終於被迫加入一個開關，可以把被偷的手機變成一塊沒用的玻璃。賣不掉偷來的手機，小偷就不會冒險去偷。
