ARTICLE
Does Grammar Still Matter?

Every few years a newspaper announces that grammar teaching is dead. Language, such writers argue, is picked up the way music is: by listening, and by reading enough literature.

The truth is less tidy. Beginners really do learn many patterns without being taught. Yet adults who never study the rules often stop improving after two or three years. Their speech stays clear but simple, and their real strength, a large vocabulary, is wasted.

A short weekly lesson on one point, say the auxiliary verbs used in questions, seems to work best. What fails is a whole term spent naming parts of speech while nobody writes a single paragraph.

Questions 29–32
29What do the newspaper writers claim?
AThat grammar teaching is no longer needed
BThat beginners need far more rules
CThat music lessons improve grammar
DThat adults learn faster than children
30According to the article, what happens to adults who never study the rules?
AThey stop improving after a few years
BThey learn faster than beginners
CThey speak more slowly every year
DThey forget their first language
31What kind of teaching does the writer support?
ADaily tests on new vocabulary
BA whole term on parts of speech
CA short weekly lesson on one point
DNo grammar teaching at all
32What does the writer think is a waste of time?
AReading literature outside class
BLearning patterns by listening
CWriting one paragraph a week
DNaming parts of speech without writing
