W: I want the one that lasts longest, price aside.
Q25. Which battery will the woman buy?
M: Welcome to the metal recycling center. Please sort your load before you reach the scale. Copper and aluminium go in the two blue containers; steel and iron go in the gray one, and we can tell them apart with a magnet, so please do not mix them. Anything with plastic still attached is paid at the lower rate, so strip wires if you can. Payment is by bank transfer, not cash, and it arrives within two working days.
Q26. Where do copper and aluminium go?
Q27. How does the center tell steel from other metals?
Q28. Why should wires be stripped?
W: A quick safety talk before you enter the workshop. Waterproof gloves must be worn at all times, because the cleaning liquid burns skin. Tie back long hair before you use the cutting machine. If a tool falls into the tank, do not reach in; switch the power off first, then tell a supervisor. Finally, report any rust you see on the frames. A rusty frame is not just ugly; it is a sign that water is getting in somewhere.
Q29. Why must gloves be worn?
Q30. What should you do first if a tool falls in the tank?
Q31. Why does rust matter?
M: Our island's power supply has changed twice. Forty years ago almost everything ran on imported fuel, which made electricity costly whenever world prices rose. Then a nuclear plant was built, and prices steadied for a generation. That plant closed last year, and the gap has been filled mostly by natural gas, with wind and solar growing quickly but from a small base. The lesson for planners is that no source stays cheap forever.
Q32. What was the problem forty years ago?
Q33. What filled the gap after the plant closed?
Q34. What is the speaker's conclusion?
| Material | Weight | Cost | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | Light | Medium | Good |
| Copper | Heavy | High | Good |
| Steel | Heavy | Low | Best |
| Plastic | Lightest | Lowest | Poor |
W: Please look at the printed comparison of four materials while I speak. Notice that the lightest of the four is not the cheapest, and the strongest is not the heaviest. We choose aluminium for the frame because weight matters more than price here. Copper would conduct better, but it costs three times as much and would double the weight. Plastic is out of the question for parts that get hot, however cheap it is.
Q35. According to the table and the talk, why is aluminium chosen for the frame?
