After a full day of classes, they eat a quick meal and sit in another classroom, where a 12 goes over the same material once more. Parents pay a great deal for these extra hours, hoping their child will win a place at a top 13. Teachers are divided. Six Evenings Beat One Long Night
Students who study a subject on six short evenings remember far more than those who cram the night before. In one test, two groups of university juniors learned the same fifty words. A month later, the spaced group recalled 68 percent; the crammers recalled only 29 percent.
Cramming is not useless. It can rescue a student on the morning of an exam. The problem is that the words vanish almost as fast as they arrive.
The researchers advise a simple rule: review new material within a day, then again after a week. Ten quiet minutes, they say, beat two hours of panic.
